Just thought I'd note that there's a small memorial to the van Pels family in the town of Osnabrück, Germany, where they lived before fleeing to Holland. Stolpersteine, or "tripping stones", bearing the names, dates of birth, and places of death of the three van Pelses were laid down near their former residence on Martinistraße.
A picture can be seen here Tripping stones for some 13,000 victims of Nazism have been laid in Germany and a few other countries so far. The project will soon be brought to Holland; I wonder if similar stones will be made for the Franks or for Fritz Pfeffer? -------------------- "Was Anne right? Is what she has told us [through her diary] so unbelievable? Or is it not more unbelievable that we have had to learn from a child how people [in hiding] lived, talked, and ate, what a human being is like and how a human being develops, and that a child was killed while we all lived and talked and ate? That child, and six of the seven persons who were in hiding with her, and another six million in addition. And we knew it, but were silent, or knew it but did not believe what we knew, and now we go on living and eating and talking.
Is that not more unbelievable?" -- Ernst Schnabel, Anne Frank: A Portrait in Courage |

It looks like I spoke too soon:
I just discovered that Stolpersteine are already being planned to commemorate Anne, Edith, and Margot. They will be set up this month -- on June 15th -- in Aachen, outside the house on Pastorplatz where they lived with Edith's mother before leaving Germany for good. I hope pictures of these memorial stones will be published when the project is completed. I can't wait to see what they look like! -------------------- "Was Anne right? I finally found a photograph of the completed Stolpersteine for the Franks in Aachen, from this page:

Yeah, I thought that Frankfurt might have been a better location for this sort of memorial, or maybe the Merwedeplein in Amsterdam, but tripping stones in Aachen also make sense: it's a memorial to a family in flight from the Nazis, on their way from one home to another. -------------------- "Was Anne right?
